About the Committee

HKSIAM Specialized Committee on Mathematical Artificial Intelligence (AI) is established to promote research, education, and community building at the interface of applied mathematicsand modern AI. As AI continues to transform science, engineering, industry, and society, mathematics plays an increasingly central role in understanding its foundations, improving itsreliability, and expanding its capabilities.

The Committee aims to provide a vibrant platform for researchers, students, and practitionersin Hong Kong and beyond who are interested in mathematical aspects of AI. It seeks to fosteracademic exchange, interdisciplinary collaboration, and talent development in this rapidlyevolving area.

Motivation

The establishment of this Committee is motivated by several considerations

1. Strengthening HKSIAM’s role in a rapidly evolving field. Artificial intelligence is one of the most active and influential research areas today. A specialized committee in Mathematics and AI will help position HKSIAM at the forefront of this development and further enhance its visibility and academic leadership in Hong Kong, the Greater Bay Area, and the broader international community.

2. Advancing the mathematical foundations of AI. Modern AI raises many fundamental mathematical questions, including those related to optimization, statistical learning, approximation theory, reasoning, geometry, dynamical systems, uncertainty quantification, scientific computing, and data-driven modeling. The Committee aims to encourage deeper interactions between mathematics and AI, and to support research that develops rigorous foundations as well as new mathematically inspired methods.

3. Expanding the scope of applied mathematics. The interaction between mathematics and AI is not limited to theoretical study. It also creates new opportunities for impactful applications in science, engineering, medicine, finance, and industry. By supporting research at this interface, the Committee will enrich the scope of applied mathematics and promote new directions of interdisciplinary innovation.

4. Building a collaborative community in Hong Kong. Hong Kong has a strong concentration of researchers in mathematics, statistics, data science, computer science, and related disciplines. Many colleagues across local institutions share a common interest in the mathematical study of AI. This Committee provides a natural platform to connect these researchers, strengthen local collaboration, and create opportunities for broader
regional and international engagement.

5. Supporting Hong Kong’s strategic development in AI. The Committee also aligns with Hong Kong’s growing strategic emphasis on AI and innovation. By promoting foundational research, cross-disciplinary dialogue, and talent cultivation, the Committee aims to contribute to the long-term development of the AI ecosystem in Hong Kong.
